One of Zola's most famous realist novels, Therese Raquin is a clinically observed, sinister tale of adultery and murder among the lower classes in nineteenth-century Parisian society. Thérèse Raquin caused a scandal when it appeared in and brought its twenty-seven-year-old author a notoriety that followed him throughout his life. Zola’s novel is not only an uninhibited portrayal of adultery, madness, and ghostly revenge, but also a devastating exploration of the darkest aspects of human existence. I love Emile Zola's writing and in my opinion this is his best book. It's a very serious novel, very dark, and the story begins in a very oppressive, property stricken setting. As with all of Zola's characters, they really seem to be alive and are totally believable. This volume, “Thérèse Raquin,” was Zola’s third book, but it was the one that first gave him notoriety, and made him somebody, as the saying goes.
