Before her death in , this Irish writer had received many honours and prizes for both her short stories and her novels. William Trevor has praised Lavin's ability to "make moments timeless, to illuminate people and places, words and things, by touching them with the magic of the rarely-gifted storyteller."Compiled by her daughter, In a CafÉ presents some of Lavin's most beloved pieces. Although less focused on 'heavy' issues, 'The Joy-Ride' was probably my favorite story. 'Lemonade,' 'In a Cafe,' 'The Convert,' 'In the Middle of the Fields,' and 'Tom,' were other favorites, probably in that order. A focus on the gaps in relations and life won out over the domestic nature of these stories. From Mary Lavin we learn about modern day hubris - and we learn to avoid so many tragic faults. My favorite stories in this collection were "In the Middle of the Fields," "A Cup of Tea," "In a Cafe," "A Story with a Pattern," "A Widow's Son," and "The Little Prince.".
